FAQs
What does your program offer?
We connect families to funding and assistance acquiring anything a child may need to assist with mobility. We started building modified power wheels for kids but have expanded our mission to provide help with any obstacle to mobility for children.
How do I apply for help with wheelchair van modifications?
This is a new part of our program. We are currently establishing a fund directly for this purpose and creating a fundraiser to get it started. Once we have the fundraiser set we will let families know how to sign up. We expect it to take a year to get this up and running and our first fundraiser under way.
Modified Power wheels
What size cars?
6-Volt to 12-Volt
Age range/How much weight?
Up to 60 lbs. for 6-Volt and up to 110 lbs. for 12-volt
Wheelchairs can hold up to 50 lbs
1-6 for ride on cars
How much would sponsors have to pay for a car?
Approximately $300 per family to $500 for larger Power Wheels such as the F150
What does a child need?
A medical diagnosis that has led to limited physical mobility. This could be a physical or health impairment that directly impairs the child's ability to be mobile and interact with their peers.
Why would we need this for our child?
Modern wheelchairs are expensive and are often not designed for our target age range. More important, a modified Power Wheel enables children to interact with their peers in a way that a wheelchair or medically designed mobility device won't. It gives them freedom to move on different terrain and helps to break social barriers by allowing the child to do things their peers are doing. Wheelchairs are not covered in Michigan by medicaid until the child is 3. Our manual wheelchairs are lower to the ground allowing social interaction with the child's peers, less expensive then conventional wheelchairs, and provide mobility during a crucial point in children's development.
